I have a broody sitting on four eggs...well three now lol... This little one hatched this morning. The other three aren't piping yet so I'm not sure if they'll hatch as ms.broody wasn't consistent about always sitting on the eggs.
Now I have a question...She is in with the general population. When I tried isolating her last week, she would have none of it. Now I have all the 'big girls' closed outside in the run as I'm worried about them harming the chick. I don't want to move 'mom' as I don't want to disturb her nest & the other three eggs. What does anyone suggest? Also, anyone recognize this breed chick? I got fertile eggs from someone and they didn't know. The eggs are dk brown with brown speckles. I'll post another pic, I'm not too sure how to post more than one at a time.

EEs are striped chipmucks too but they lay green or blue or sometimes pink tinted eggs. Who lays speckled like that?

Ah, your chick is from a broody. If thats the case, it is possible that the other eggs are a day or more behind because they were sat on less. They need 21 days of heat so if you hen decides to leave with one chick, candle the others to see if they are still developing. If so, time to rig up a temp incubator!

My broody had chicks in with the rest of my girls and she did fine. It isn't recommended though.

That's what I was thinking (about the eggs). I want to know what breed laid them.

I went to MyPetChicken webiste - it tells the egg color, but speckled eggs were not listed... maybe feldon can fill us in...

I found out what they are. They are Welsummer (sp). Still only one chick, one egg pipping & one egg nothing happening.

I dont know what kind your chick is. But if momma is fiesty I wouldnt worry about the other chickens. Mommas will knock the poop right out of any thing that getes to close to her baby. I too would candle the remaining eggs. If it looks like you might have some live babies then I to would rig up a incubator to see if you couldnt get them to hatch out. But thats also if your new momma is off the nest.Congradulations on your new baby. I hope the othewr two will hatch. Good luck!!
