Hi,

I am thinking about raising chickens for some extra money and because I have become a chicken fanatic over the past few years since I first started keeping them. I know I won't get rich and may not even break even but I think it will be fun and exciting for me and the kids.

So far my favorite breeds that I think would do well are Speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, New Hampshire. I would like one more option that is in high demand. I am in North Texas so I would like a breed that would do well around here. I am not asking that you pick "your personal favorite", but from your experience and knowledge, what would sell well in my area. Thanks for your answers and if you choose "other" please let me know in a post which breed you recommend.

Breeds and color varieties come and go.
You need to pick something that you like and does well for you. Around here one day they are wanting large fowl Cochins the next week or so they are wanting something else.
Me I'm mixing mine up a bit because that is what I like. I still do have a few pure breds though.

If you have kids, silkies would be my recommendation . Everyone that comes to my garden falls in love with my silkies. When I first started breeding them, my neighbor said that my chooks looked so " fancy ", hence : fancychooklady. I keep several breeds and while silkies aren't my favorite , I can't keep up to demand. Which ever breed you go with, make sure you start with good breeders.

Hi from Missouri. I agree with the others ,trends come and go. Where I'm at Rhode Island reds and white leghorns is my top sellers. And the blue Andalusian is real close second. I can't get anybody to buy green or blue eggs in the winter up here except for a few open minded school teachers, so I don't carry them anymore. I know I'm not the only breeder/seller in my part of the country so, what I've heard to be good sellers from fellow sellers is the Legbars($$$) and the silkies go over well for the ladies. Find something you believe in. That's most important. J.D.

Lol, that is a very creative marketing strategy!!!

Thank you, that's something else folks like they like lots of pictures of your chickens. (I do too.) It gives them a good idea what to expect, even though they will want to come see your flock in person.
