I've been thinking about getting chickens after wanting them for several years. A friend of mine told me about this site. I live in Texas, so we have hot summers to deal with. I need a friendly breed that won't mind being cooped up. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've done the mypetchicken site, and it offered some good information.

I was just curious if anyone had some personal experience down in these hot summer states.
I have neighbors, not that close, about an acre or two away.

Welcome.

Is it hot there? Really?

I have a light brown leghorn that is real mellow and does well in the heat.

Red and black Sex links...

I have a CA white X Porcelain D'Uccle that does well.

What are you looking for in a chicken? eggs, meat, eggs and meat, as a pet only, to show, to raise young chickens, to develop a breeding program, good with young children, quiet, strange-looking? Hard to make a meaningful recommendation if you don't know the criteria.

Hi Maggierae! I live in Texas and I have about 15 different breeds of chickens. They all are doing well with the heat. I make sure they have access to shade and water. I say go with what your hearts desire is, they will do just fine. Welcome ! Micah
