Looking for a nice rooster...

If you want a nice rooster, look in ads locally for someone selling extra roosters. They will be grown and the seller (if honest), will be able to tell you if the Roo is a friendly one or a mean one.

We've had sassy Roos and sweet Roos.

Sassy:

Polish
Welsummer

Sweet:

EE
Red Cap

Just like everything else (people too!) some are good some are bad. Interaction with the animals is key. The Red Cap Roo we have now is named "Spike" and he is a very sweet boy. Kids hold him and carry him around.

How very interesting. I have several roosters, but my Sultan roo was my favorite. He had gotten beaten up pretty badly by my other rooster and I carefully nursed him back to health. He would hang out in the yard with me, I'd give him treats, etc. until he was better.

I gave him his own pen after that and about 6 hens. He was fabulous with the hens, but he started attacking me and anyone else on sight. I had to get rid of him and I cried my eyes out- he and I used to be the best of buddies!!!

My huge Black Australorp, my Barred Rock roo, my Belgian D'Anver roo, none of them give me any problems. But I've never spent any time with them either. I take care of their water, food, treats and coop, but I don't hold them, treat them as pets or anything else. Perhaps that was the problem. I can tell you that I'll never do that with a roo again - hens, sure. Not a roo...

I have several different roos right now. One of the best is my Orpington. He broke up a hen fight the other day (they were bumping chests, nobody was getting hurt) - it was super funny to see. One of my cochin girls (bantam) was on the war path for some reason and kept picking fights with the other girls. Well, she picked a fight with my silkie cross hen. My Orpington roo saw them, ran over in between the 2, looked at the cochin and "yelled" at her, then he actually stomped his foot at her and made her leave! Through this whole show, he never once touched the hen, but he did get his point across

He is also very docile, even though he is a big heavy boy, and has never been mean at all. My husband was actually a little intimidated by him at first, but I told him to just walk up to the rooster and pick him up like any other bird. No big deal.

I also had 12 RIR roos (they came as packing peanuts with some ducklings) that were well behaved, and better guard dogs than our dogs! They never once tried to be mean to us, or anybody that frequented our place. But, if a stranger came onto the property, those roos were like piranhas!! They actually chased a grown man down the driveway

I thought it was amusing

The other roosters that I have that are very good to their ladies are my seramas. Go ahead and laugh, but they alert everybody to danger, find the goodies and call the hens, and are super sweet to us. If you aren't looking to have chicks from your hens eggs, then a serama would do. Obviously he couldn't fight off a hawk, but they can still sound the warning.

I have had a quiet a few roos in 3 years. I'd have to say my sweetest in my standard white leghorn Kernal...He's the best boy I have ever had. I've had contact with him since he hatched. He's also a good gaurd chicken.. HATES strangers.. I have a bantam wyandotte roo and he doesn't have a mean streak in him. Also a showgirl roo and he went through his puberty and got a little aggressive, put him in his place and nothing since. A little mix roo that is afraid of me since he was raised by a broody that is skittish.

The roos I've got rid of: 4 miller fluer OEGBs 3 out of 4 would gang up on my parents and flog them from 3 sides. Didn't hurt but it surprised you!
