Our personal favorite, the Chantecler, developed in Canada for cold tolerance, a dual purpose breed.
The best laying hens are leghorns and their crosses, mostly with singe combs, which will frostbite in winter. The best fast growing meat birds are Cornishx hybrids, who are eaten at eight to twelve weeks of age, so winter hardiness isn't an issue.
Look at the Henderson breed chart, and read up on breed types for good choices. Then, order a few of several interesting breeds, and see who you like.
