We are looking into starting a small chicken coop and currently looking for female silkies and finding it difficult.
Is it common to be able to purchase specific females? Or is typically you buy a batch of unsexed? What do you do with the males?

Thanks!

I've seen adult silkies for sale at a couple of hatcheries and a couple of exhibition breeders but those are very expensive and I doubt that's what you're looking for. One hatchery I saw offering sexed silkie chicks. They must do their own DNA there. The chicks were about double the cost, but still cheaper than having a hen shipped. If you want the name, I'll find it. It was one of the most popular ones.

I'm in several poultry groups for my state and area on Facebook and do buy/sell through those, although carefully. There's a bit of a trick to just posting a certain way and tell people to message you if interested. Bigger cities may have poultry groups by breed too. I've seen adult silkies for sale in the groups I'm in. Most poultry groups have chat groups, and I'm in a couple of silkie ones. There you can talk prices, etc.

Facebook and Craigslist are the two places I've peddled roosters at. They are usually so pretty, someone will want them. You can also check Craigslist for your area to see if anyone's selling any. If in a pinch, we have a rooster sanctuary about 1 1/2 hours from here. We've been there once. You could see if you have one of those near too.
