I just bought a house with grape vines and fruit trees! And as gifts at my housewarming party, guess what I got? Strawberry plants and MORE fruit trees!
Now, the existing orchard is neglected, and the new trees are very young, so I don't know how much fruit I will get this year, but I know I have at LEAST 5 cherry trees, a japanese plum, 2 grape vines, and a yellow delicious apple. This does not count about eight other trees that I know are fruit trees of some kind, but are not tagged and are just barely beginning to come out of dormancy.
I am excited for this, but have little experience with using fresh cherries for anything and I know it can be hard to find truly 'from scratch' recipes.
I am looking for anything that you would recommend. What would YOU do with an abundance of cherries?
The varieties I have are: van, sam, black tartarian, royal ann, and montmorency. I may have others... at least 3 of the older unmarked trees look like cherries, and I think I have either apples or pears that are unmarked too.
It is such an adventure! I can't wait till my garden is going and I have fruit growing... I will certainly make use of my juicer, canners, freezer, and dehydrater this year!

some cherries are sour cherries and others are fresh eating cherries.. i pit and can cherries to be used later in other dishes.. pies, on ice cream etc..they last forever that way and are delicious when it is winter and you would like a cherry turn over..

I dry tons of cherries to eat like raisins. You can pour boiling water over them and use them for pies, too!
I love pie with sweet cherries! Cobbler, juice, granola, coffee cake, jam, tarts....
But my favorite, next to fresh cherries, are dried cherries.
