Currently I am 8 mos into my first chicken-keeping experience (well since I was a little kid, anyways) Things are going well. I have a huge backyard in a semi-rural setting. We've managed to make things work with a small, previously owned prefab coop in a 25' x 15' run. I have four sweet, somewhat spoiled girls who get to free-range in the 1/3 of an acre (guessing on that) backyard a lot. My neighbors all like us and one even gladly puts the girls to bed and let's them out in the morning when we're out of town.
In two years, there is a high likelihood that I will be relocating to the Sacramento area - 5.5 hrs to the southeast of our current location. I've been researching the real estate market and the different ordinances in all the different towns/communities that make up the area. Thankfully chickens are allowed - depending on where you are, as few as three hens and as much as 6! So that's great
I'm a person who likes to have my house and yard looking nice, I'm hoping we can afford a place with a pool. And I'm hoping there will be enough room for me to have a little garden and three or four hens.
Our budget isn't going to allow for an expansive property- from my research, I'm thinking we're probably going to be looking at around a .17-.25 acre lot with neighbors all around.
I watch my girls happily free-ranging now and I wonder what it will be like in our new setting. I'm thinking a well thought out and designed coop, run and garden area will be key and I'm hoping some of you will have good advise for me!
