I’m excited!!! After years of planning me and the hubby are finally starting our Maine homestead dreams. Now we’re looking at getting our flock ready. We’re able to pick up ourselves pretty much anywhere in Maine and are looking for any pre-laying age (other then unhatched). We also plan on breeding and building our flock so female AND males are welcome!

We’re looking to start with Sussex (either Light or Speckled) and/or the Heritage (non industrial) Rhode Island Red. We want the chickens to free range on the property, so we would like to find a local breeder or one within upper new England who has worked with managing a flock that has thrived in that situation with the climate. We mainly want them to lay, but as time goes on I want to have show quality birds, so a mixture of birds with laying ability and birds with extra flash for shows is what we’re going for. But the overall need is that the birds are true to their breed and registered if possible (for when we eventually show) .

It’ll be awhile before we actually get started on building up the property for the little ladies/dudes, but we wanted to start the legwork of finding breeders we can contact, visit, or start working with to get started once we’re ready! We’re also planning on having Ameraucana, Marans, and Cream Legbar down the road too if anyone knows someone who plans to work with these breeds.

Thanks a bunch!!!!
