Ok usually my hens when they go broody do it in or around the yard. I have never not found one until now. My Black Cochin hen , Kahlil has been gone for a while. I usually write down the date even if it is approximate but this time It was hectic right around then, I was nursing sick and dying chicks (cocci) and neglected to put the date on calender. So as I said, hen is missing we are in a heat spell 90 degrees here in Washington state is a heat spell. I have tried nearly daily to look for her. We live on 52 acres and of course it is wooded. I am worried sick about her. The only sign I have had of her is a broody poop. Typically I know hens poop almost immediately after leaveing the nest, I fanned out and looked in 10 feet or so in every direction. nothing. Does anyone have any ideas for finding a black hen in a forest who would rather not be found. I would greatly appreciate any advice. OH also i should mention there are several drop offs of five feet between where she is at ( i think) so left to herself can she get however many chicks safeely home? Also she had been coming home daily to eat and drink and then stopped two days ago which I woulde take to mean that she probably has live babies now. This is day three if i don't find them soon they willl die. I hate losing birds anyway, I should be out there looking for her and her family. thank you again for any advice.

My only advice is to keep looking. Her not returning could mean she's hatching or has hatch. Or, it could mean a predator has found her and her nest. I hope not, but its something I'd prepare myself for if I were in your situation.

Good luck.

thank you for your reply...as luck would have it, her babies were chriping when I got home so was able to find her. She and 8 cfhicks, all black with clean legs...must have been Dad because mom is booted. I found her nest site also and backtracked to make sure no babies were left behind. All but one egg hatched. So grateful she is safe and babies too. As it turns out she was literally right under our nose the whole time, not bad for a first time mom. Thanks again and have a wonderful day.

Oh, that's so great! I'm so glad you found her, and it sounds like she had a great hatch to boot!

I love a happy ending :D

Congrats!
