Hi i am new to this and am looking for winter hearty breeds of eggs for hatching, i would like to have 2 hens ideally...Would love to pick up locally vs shipped?? If anyone is in MA and has some fertile eggs, please let me know!!
thx

I don't have any for sale- nor do I live close by--but try for a sex link chicken or a wyandotte. I have both- red stars(sex link) and Silver laced wyandottes- 2 years ago through 11 days- in December- with out electricity because of an ice storm- no lights in the coop.--They laid right on.. Didn't miss a day!! I'm sure there are others but I'm sold on these breeds. My orpington didn't do near as good. I'm trying australorp's now to see how they do. Susan

what exactly is a sex link??? can i have a bit of chick 101

I hatche dout chicks in nov and dec. under a broody and in the barn, they did great,I did use a heat lamp for about 2m ffor the chicks but everybody did well and we had a very hard winter. Many nites in single digits with some below zero.I have bantam cochins and some other mixed birds. Also my showgirl and barred rocks.

do you think i need to insulate my shed?? I dont have heat or electricity in there yet??

my barn is not insulated.I jusst made sure it was as draft free as possible.Once the snow hit nobody went outside til spring so I closed up the chicken doors hung some tarps my coop is in the barn itself so hung the tarps to help cut down on drafts, and hung alight for them since i don't have any windows.

I do have windows, do u think i need a light??

no.I think you will get some good info on the other areas of this forum too, coop section has lots of good info, and breeds sec.post your questions there too this sec.is selling and buying eggs so not tooo many are answering your questions.

I recommend our Speckled Sussex. They are very winter hardy and year round layers, especially if you put a light on...

We sell hatching eggs and they are $27 which includes priority shipping/packing and tracking number.

These are very pretty chickens and ours are non-hatchery - SQ birds and so affectionate. They let me pet them! It's the one pen I can put my fingers through and still count to five! no injuries.

Well if you are interested, please pay pal

Hi. I'm in NH I built my coop last summer. It's too far from the house for electricity, so no heat or light up there. We are way colder here than on the cape, so you should be fine without electricity too. The only problem was keeping them with melted water. I had to carry out fresh water several times a day since it kept freezing. But the birds did fine. Even my Andalusian, which is not supposed to be a cold-weather bird, did fine. Where are you on the cape?
