We are in southwest MI and the latter part of the week was “warmer” (40 degrees), snow was melting and we have a tempting mud puddle in our driveway. I was able to let our ducks out to free range and play in the muddy puddles. It was during this time that I noticed one of my females lagging behind or being off on her on rather than part of the flock. Yesterday I put her inside the coop, eventually bringing her inside, setting her in a straw filled tub with containers of water and food to watch her. She died during the night.

I let my remaining ducks out of the coop this morning, food, water, etc. and went back into the house to do various morning things and clean up my bathtub. A couple hours later when I went outside to straighten up the duck coop, all of my ducks were inside of it. They don’t choose to be inside when they could be out. This would be the last place they saw their missing flock member. Are they looking for her?

So sorry for your loss! :hugs
Yes, i think ducks remember their flock members for a short time. When my drake Donald disappeared, his best friend Nona wasn't herself for several days. Usually she and Donald were wandering around the yard together, foraging, talking, sleeping and for several days she now was roaming the garden alone, visiting the places she and her friend had been. Ducks can mourn…
