Looking to buy blue, green, & chocolate laying hens in MD.

Hello,

I have a backyard flock that have just come into lay. Our egg color assortment is almost complete except we don't have a chocolate, olive, and blue egg layer breed. I am looking to buy a young laying hen in the DMV (and extended) area.

Could you order from an online hatchery? 'Cause most likely you could find a Black Copper Marans (chocolate eggs), Olive Egger (90% chance of olive eggs), or Ameraucanas (blue eggs) there. They're all more pricey, but if they lay enough beautiful eggs, it may be worth it! Do you want chicks, hens already laying, or what?

Thank you for your response! I have considered hatcheries in the past but to order a chicken that is at the point of lay is so expensive when you factor in the shipping costs. I've considered raising them from chicks but since my ladies are already laying I didn' want to put in the work or wait the time it takes for them to begin laying. It looks like what I have have to do though. I actually have blue eggs now I'm not sure how I forgot that when I posted.

x2 on what Better Than Rubies posted. An online hatchery sounds like a great solution unless you're lucky enough to live near one that has the breeds you want.

If you're in it for eggs, I don't blame you at all, ha ha. =P (The biggest reason I want to get chickens as chicks is so I can hopefully tame them!)
Lol, okay then.
But, if you have a local Craigslist, then there's still a cheaper option for an adult bird already laying. Whatever you end up doing, I hope it goes well and you get lots of pretty eggs!

Definitely check Craigslist. I don't know where the DMV area is, but there is a boys club in Baltimore that raises a lot of rare breeds and if you keep an eye out you'll find individuals selling birds as well. I drove out there to buy my Wheaten Marans pullets.
