My house and 1 acre are all that are left from a small commercial chicken farm, Haines Hen House. It is situated between the Schuykill River and Girard Canal in SEPA
I don't know the years of operation but i believe it was up until the 60s .Old aerial photos show a series of small hen houses. My neighbors small charming stonehouse was a brood house among other things in its 200 year history.
I have a photo from the late 1920's showing a coop on spoked wheels in my yard. My cellar had an old rotting sorting and packing bench. It had been stamped many times with rubber stamps designating egg size and Hen House address.
Anyway, I've never had chickens but I'm looking to get a few laying chickens to start with then work up to raising broilers to fill the freezer each spring.
There are many hawks and foxes around. I'm considering building a covered run on an existing concrete pad and putting 12"+ of soil in it.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
I would love to see some of those historic photos. That is really cool!
Having a large, completely predator proof run attached to your coop is the way to go IMHO.
