(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes and none yet

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, pending a chicken coop choice

(3) What breeds do you have? I would love Lavender so I found some local Lavender brahmas that might be a contender but Lavender Orpington is on my wish list.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I would like dual purpose birds because I am not a vegetarian but definitely eggs and some girls to talk to while I'm out in my garden fighting off the bugs in South Louisiana.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I sew, cook & watch my grandson so once we move out to our 10 acres, I hope to add gardening to that list along with keeping chickens.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am in a wheelchair and I have a German Shepard service dog. My job the past few years has been training him and watching my grandson. My dog is 4 and my grandson will be 3 in 2/23 so they grew up together and both are addicted to being with me. I hope to set up some raised beds for gardens and some paths wide & flat enough for the wheelchair to get to a chicken coop & shed, then I'll buy the coop & the chickens. I gotta set myself up for success but I'm just so excited about having the chance to live in the woods and produce what my family eats from my own efforts. the picture below is for the before...they have cleared a spot for my house now and there will be a fence and a gate for the dog before we move in. I have trained this dog to love a baby that pulls his ears and doesn't share toys so I am hopeful that he will recognize that these chickens are something we are taking care of and only mommy gets to pick when its time to eat them.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I've been watching videos on Youtube to educate myself about chickens and their care. A creator I like recommended joining a few forums so as a newbie I would have a source of information from people who have done this before, so thanks for the add.

Welcome to BYC!!

Hello and welcome! I applaud you for looking into chickens before buying, as opposed to the BYC famous spur of the moment chick pick up. I highly recommend Lavender Orpingtons with young children. I have 4 and they have been lovely and sweet. Mine love to hop up and sit in my lap whenever they can. However, I have handled them since they were 4 days old, to make sure they were good with being handled. I am not sure if they would be as sweet without the frequent handling.
