Sorry for the long post
Im feeling like a terrible chicken owner and I'm in a season of losing several chickens very close together and none of them seem to have the same issues but it has to be some underlying thing?? I would love to get y'all's opinions on what you think - just today I had to put an 8-week-old chick down
I noticed her laying down with her neck stretched out eyes wide and alert but definitely more lethargic she was walking around fine jumped up on the roost but then slowly her head would start to droop down and as she was doing that she would extend the neck outward I assumed it was not Marek's because it seemed like the head and neck were the first to start to droop and from what I've seen of Merrick's the legs and wings go first then I thought maybe it was Wry neck but she never really wiggled it around or turned it funky to the side it was like the head went straight out and then lowered down to the ground I separated her and gave her selenium and poultry cell in hopes it was just a vitamin deficiency but the next morning she was completely paralyzed so then I saw botulism and started to do the Epsom salt flush and Then followed up several hours later with activated charcoal and this evening I just decided that she was suffering too much and she wasn't showing any signs of perking up for me to think that she was going to come back from it
then just two and a half weeks ago I had a chicken that passed away from what I believe was a crop issue this is the second chicken that I've had die from a crop issue(A year ago) and I have a really hard time getting it figured out - her crop would empty but very slowly so I didn't think that it was sour crop no smell or anything but she was puffed up all the time with purple comb but no wheezing or trouble breathing and was definitely the bottom of the pecking order and slowly started losing more and more weight no matter how much I tried to get in her Even tube feeding her at times for weeks
checked her she had no mites or lice vent was clear I tried massaging her crop every single day multiple times and also treated her with Corrid really not sure what I did wrong there
then I had a chicken that became egg bound thank God I soaked her and she ended up working through that but it just feels like I'm having a lot of health issues in my flock I also have one right now that is Puffy around the eyes but I just treated them with Corrid but maybe I need to treat them again we have had alot of rain so I keep thinking worms
They have a decent size free range yard but ofcourse when it rains it's a mud pit but they do have a covered run as well where the food is and I checked the food and see zero mold I actually had always fed all flock feeder and then switched to layer feed and I'm wondering if the lower protein could be something and they have free choice grit and oyster shell
I've ordered some probiotics for their water I also put a dewormer herb mix in their food
It has been extreme back and forth temps here in DFW maybe the stress? Sorry for the long post I'm just feeling a bit frantic for my poor gals because every symptom could be 15 different things
