In the Brooder
I just noticed that under at least two of my hens' aprons, there is a loss of feathers and also in one case down under their aprons. Tried to find info on this with a forum search and can't seem to find this exact problem.
This seems to defeat the purpose of the apron, if it is rubbing off the feathers and down ?? Unless there are mites or lice in play -- I can't see any but I have poor vision.
Background: I have 1 rooster and 7 hens, they are 13 months old. Five of the hens wear saddles, some since last summer. They free range on my property with the oversight of the rooster, my dog and myself doing outside work. The main risks are hawks and eagles.
Would like advice on my options. I suppose one would beL

- Sequester the rooster in their chicken tractor (would have to move him at night, he is feisty).
- Sequester the hens in the run around their coop, saddles off, until their feathers regrow.
- Let the hens free range supervised by me only for an hour before sunset.
