lost 15 eggs - boo hoo

Only 5 chicks hatched, and being day 23 I decided to investigate. I candled and carefully opened an egg. It was a gooey mess. No chick at all. Does this mean it was not fertile? I did get the 5 chicks. I can't understand!! They were all in incubator together under same conditions. Thanks for any info! I need to learn from this!

Have you tried candling at all? You should be able to tell which eggs had developed and which did not by candling them.

I did candle them, and apparently I am really bad at it!! I thought they were developing. I need a better method.
