One of my girls died yesterday and I don't know what happened. She was a buff orpington that I got in March of last year with the rest of my flock of 8. They whole flock has been doing great with the exception of one that disappeared without a trace in October (assuming a predator got her). They free range on 5 acres surrounded by hundreds of acres of cornfields. None of them had any signs of distress or sickness, but one of them was dead yesterday when I got home from work. This time of year, I am letting them out right before I leave for work as the sun is rising. I rely on my kids to close the coop and enclosure as the sun goes down before I get home. Last night when I got home, my son realized that he forgot to tend to them. He went out but came back in crying saying one was dead. I went out and she was laying on her face. I pulled her out of the coop and she didn't have a mark on her. They were all fine in the morning. When I let them out, they all follow me back to the house because I throw them some corn or other goodies. They were all out of the coop and eating yesterday, so she either went in and died sometime during the day, or after they went in at night time. I am worried that if she was sick, my other girls might me sick too, but I didn't see anything to cause any red flags. Any idea of what could have happened?

Could you post pictures of the hen? Are you sure she doesn’t have a broken neck? She could have fallen and broken her neck, which would explain why she doesn’t have a mark.

Meaning that she didn't have any signs that a raccoon or something that got to her. I've had to fend off a hawk that tried to get them before (by screaming and yelling at it for lack of options) and we have raccoons, opossums, and other things like that around here. I asked my wife to take some pictures this morning since it was dark when I got home and I still use a dumb phone with a horrible camera. I will post them when she sends them to me (back at work again).

Probably would want someone who at least handles either poultry or other farm animals. I had the same exact thing happen to me 1 of my flock of 12 was suddenly dead in the coop in the morning. I was so sad and worried about everyone else getting sick. I decided to dissect her myself to check for any abnormalities and found a huge pocket of blood under the skin. When I let the blood out a piece of plastic was inside and fell out with the blood. She had hemorrhaged and died. All that time she acted perfectly fine. I feel better though knowing the rest of my flock is safe

Here is a picture.
