Well, today after getting back to the house from running some errands I heard the girls making odd noises when carrying in groceries. I put some away and then decided to go check on them as I didn't see them under the coop which there are always some under there. I go over and open the gate to the run and walk around back of the coop and there are all my girls and the rooster about 15 feet away from a coopers hawk sitting on top of my lifeless black easter egger hen. It just sat there on her back and looked at me. i am like 20 feet away and he never moves-I wave my arms in the air and tell it to get out of here and it still sits there. I finally picked up a chunk of wood and threw it at it and it flew off. Not far either! My hen had all the meat eaten off her head and neck down to her shoulders-it was a neat mess---so now I know that is what killed the two I found last summer--same type of injuries. This thing was a fourth of the size of the hen--truly amazing-didn't look to be much of a fight either--feathers were at a minimum.

Coopers Hawks have been my single biggest killer. The only positive about a Coopers Hawk is that they cant take an adult chicken - they have to come back to finish eating. Now that its killed a chicken, you will have a problem for a while with botht the male and female.
