My 25 chicks came from Meyer last Monday- and took till thursday to get here.
Amazingly they all arrived alive. One was very week and passed in the first 24 hours..
The others seemed OK.
Yesterday another one looked weak, and was just laying around.. I tried to force feed her a bit of egg yold last night. This morning she was barely hanging on, and a couple hours later she was gone.

Why would a baby chick that looked fine for a couple days just all of a sudden get sick and die?

The others all seem fine... I hope they stay that way.

Sometimes you never know - and it can seem like the hardest part, the not knowing.

Some just fail to thrive. Are you keeping an eye out for pasty butt? It will kill them quickly due to blocking their vent.

yes, I have cleaned many fuzzy butts in the last couple days. Only one when they first arrived was bad enough that it blocked the vent. that one pooped as soon as it was cleaned up. The others have just had poop stuck to their bums, but not blocking anything.. She wasn't pasty.. but she did have green poops just before she passed.

I sympathize with you..

I just lost one of my 1 week old chicks a few days ago.. The night before, she was fine.. I had given them some scrambled egg and she was running around playing keep away along with the rest of them.. The next day, i went in to check on them, she was sitting still and refused to get up.. I gave her a few drops of water with some vitamins in it to try and perk her up and put her back.. There was no sign of trauma or injury.. She just wouldn't get up.. The only thing out of the ordinary was that her legs were a bit pale.. After a few hours, I picked her back up to try to give her a few more drops and she wouldn't take it.. Only minutes after I had picked her up, she gasped a few times, kicked twice and then she was gone.. I didn't even have time to cull her.. The rest of them are thriving just fine so the only thing I can think of was some kind of circulatory or heart problem that couldn't have been helped.. Unfortunately, it happens sometimes...
