We lost our baby chick this morning

. Lastnight it was in an enclosed pen but it could have fitted through the gaps in the mesh. This has never happened before. We have two other hens and a rooster. The chick wasn't weak and chirped quite loudly.

Today though, it is as if it has never existed. The mother hen isn't bothered by the missing chick and we have no idea where it could be.

What is the best way of finding a baby chick?

Yes, birds leave remains when they eat a chick. Don't ask me how I know this.

I am thinking you may have a rat (most likely), snake (second choice, but if you live down south it might be first choice), mink or weasel at work.

Sorry for your loss.

To prevent that I'd buy mesh with SMALL squares and wrap it around their pen to keep the chicks in and predators' arms out.
