Today my 5 month old hen had to be euthanized. She had been eating and drinking normally, or so I thought. She had some odd tics, but was active & incredibly cuddly.
This morning she collapsed snd I took her immediately yo the Vet. I was told she had a neurological virus that attacked her nervous system, she wasn’t able to open & close her crop. The vet she was in pain & there wasn’t any treatment. He did not seem concerned about it being contagious.
I plan on clearing pen and coop and adding new straw and new sand.
Has anyone had this kind of illness in one of their hens? The flock gets organic crumble, grit, worms and daily fresh produce. Their housed under a roof. I have booties for visitors but I am really the only one in their pen.
I adored this Barred Cochin, Winsome. She was ‘wing-birb’ for my crippled Brahma - who gets around the pen and up & down the ramp(she has ‘asymmetrical limb deformity) despite a poor prognosis.
I’ve lost one to prolapse, and this one to a virus (not avian flu), and had a healthy chick lose the use of one leg…being a chicken keeper for just 2 years has been kind of tough!
