Even though I didn't get to name her, my two boys insisted on "Red" (the EE being held by my older son). She has always been a winter molter. She looked ratty like all molting birds for a week but this last week her new feathers were getting past the pin feather stage and she was starting to look good. She has been perky, always came to greet me (I have a insulated coop with a heat lamp going 24/7). I was so surprised when I found her dead this morning. She was four years old this past May. She is the only chicken in my flock that molts in the winter. The other two chickens that are from her batch (McMurray) a White rock and yellow japanese bantam both molt in the late summer/fall. It will be one of the mysteries of being a chicken keeper.
