My wife has a home based hair salon and we’ve have 9 layer chickens. One of her customers was waiting and went behind our house and fed them grapes in the coop, couple days ago I noticed one of my hens was acting weird and noticed her crop was huge like a softball and told my wife we need to find out what’s going on (thursday)and as soon she picked her up she starting spewing liquid out of her mouth. Long story but this morning (Sunday)we massaged her crop and and she started doing it again and A big piece of grape came out, her client was waiting and fed our girls grapes. She died this morning out of the blue sitting on a chair on the deck and turned her head and starting convulsing and was gone within in a minute. 2.5 years raising 9 chicks from day old and never had a problem until today and from some brain dead $uck thought it was ok to feed my girls whole grapes.

I'm sorry for your loss, it's always hard to lose one.

I agree, it's rude to feed someone's animals without asking. But grapes should be ok for chickens to eat. I think it's more likely your girl had other underlying issues causing a slow emptying crop.

Jeff69, I am so sorry.

That just guts me to read. Two and a half years raising her right, keeping her healthy, knowing your birds inside and out, and all it takes is someone who didn't even ask to feed her grapes who didn’t even stop to think. People see a chicken and assume it’s a backyard toy. They don’t get that these girls have systems as touchy as any other animal, and once something’s off in that crop, it can go downhill fast.

What really stings is, we over here just came through our own horror story. Little girls next door fed our darling Delta Dawn wrong. Then 6 vets missed the point that DD had repor issues that was giving her mini strokes. She went down hill and I got her back only for her to die in my lap. People have no idea, and right now we are pursuing legal action against the vets...

You're not alone. We share your anger, your grief, your frustration and shock. You lost her because other people didn’t take her life seriously enough. Same as us.

Please know, you did right by her. Right up to the end. So take care of the others, and take care of yourself too. Maybe let the rest of the flock have a little quiet time out there today. I reckon she’d like that.

Very sorry for your loss. They will usually peck at grapes and each pieces. Chickens can develop crop problems from long grasses, reproductive problems, or worms. But the chicken may have eaten too many and possibly had a crop problem already. I would put up signs warning customers to not feed them.
