Lost my whole flock

I'm so upset and can't stop crying I came out to our coop to our whole flock slaughtered by probably a mink. I'm so upset..I know it's my fault for not having it as secured as I wanted..we have had our chickens for months with no problems..we are just going to have to do with out to afford better hardwire cloth..My poor roosters did such a great job you can tell they were defending the girls..the stupid animal just killed for sport not even to eat them for food..they just took some of the heads, and killed the rest. I would feel at least a little better if I knew something was just hungry and needed to feed its babies..but this was just vicious. Sorry guys I just needed to vent. I'm just so sad.

I’m so sorry you lost your flock.

Vent all you like. We understand.
It will take time to get through the shock, but I hope you can start over with new chicks.

To say I'm shocked is an understatement It was just so horrific. I'd seen pictures of other peoples attacks, but it is just different when it's your own little buddies. My poor husband woke up to me sobbing and shaking and trying to explain to him what happened.

No we don't live near a mink farm. I had a person at the farmer's market tell me they lost their whole flock in one to a mink though. That was over a year ago.

My husband ordered the hardcloth wire, and another trap. The sad part is we were going to get the last 8 hens from the flock that was born this spring from the lady we bought them from. We are going to pay for them for her to hold them for us until after my husband fortifies our coop.

I'm just so sad.

i completely understand we lost half our flock to coccidiosis this summer maybe look into getting
i might look into getting a brahma rooster
for the next flock they are big and beefy might intimidate ground predators
or asil rooster since they were actually breed to fight
i might also look into getting a dog bred to protect live stock

LORD JESUS has always taken good care of me I will be alright! <3 Death is just a painful part of this life. Thank God it won't always be this way I have a better home awaiting with LORD JESUS!

I'm really sorry to hear this. I'm also kind of gambling with the security of my setup. We have quite a few black bears, and I haven't hot-wired because it would be a pretty big inconvenience. I know I'll feel terrible if/when something happens.

Don't beat yourself up. You know what type of predators you're dealing with, and you have a game plan going forward. Chickens have a pretty rough life, between predators, illness/injuries, and the constant egg laying.

My husband's ordered hard wire cloth and a trap so LORD willing all that will do the job.
