Last night one of my quail zipped around 9
I watched got over an hr and it didn't come out so I went to bed.
This morning it still didn't hatch. I waited till 4pm to really helped him out. He has curled toes and wings don't look quite right. He was struggling standing up. But he really tried

I left him in the incubator for a couple of hrs he didn't fluff up... just pretty much stand there not doing much anything
Tonight when I went to check on the eggs one chicken hatched. So I made a decision to take out the quail and put him in a container in the brooder so the chicken doesn't stump on him.

Well he died not long after
I feel so bad. I think I killed it... Even tho I likely have to cull it if he is still struggling Or I could have helped earlier maybe he wouldn't have so much trouble standing and everything.

Just feel sad
Kinda took away the excitement of the first chicken hatch. I also only have 6 out of 12 quails hatched. It's kinda bad rate isn't it for quail ?

I'm sorry he didn't make it.
If you don't already have a salt tested humidity gauge and at least one calibrated thermometer in your incubator get one.

Those are two things you can control and keeping them both at the right number can help prevent issues. Not all issues can be prevented though. Make sure your breeding stock gets a good balanced diet helps ensure the chicks hatch out healthy too.

She is the last one hatched out of 6 the other 5 are healthy and running around in the brooder right now.

I have two thermometer /hygrometer combo in the incubator. One is a weather station from my neighbor he said should be correct. The other one is a small digital one I have from Amazon that I don't know how to calibrate the temperature as it says the sensor is not water proof so how can I do the hot or cold water test ? I can't find any information on how to do it online
I also just ordered a red spirit thermometer so I can calibrate that one to see how off my other one is.
The two thermometer reads about 1 degree difference from each other. I will double check on them again for next time but I feel there is a few temperature spots in my hovabator. I need to rotate the eggs more during incubation

This is my attempt to create my own breading stock :) I'm gonna try again on quails next time once this batch comes out

Just feel sad. Feel I should have helped her last night maybe she won't be so weak then

Try not to be too hard on yourself.
