Wednesday was just a horrible day. Our 19-year-old cat, with many medical problems, declined to the point where i had to take her in to be euthanized. It was gut-wrenching. Came back to find our white crested Cindy Lou could not stand. She has had neurological issues since we got her as a duckling. She was half the size of her friends and shaky. But we put extra vitamins in the water and she made it.

She was always unsteady on her feet, and her neck was crooked, but she seemed to live a fairly normal duck life. Last year when she seemed to be falling over more than usual, i took her in for blood work and it was normal. She came out of that episode. But for the last couple of days before Wednesday, she was falling over a lot. When i got home from the vet on Wednesday, she was falling over constantly. i brought her in the house and propped her in a carrier with towels. But it got worse very quickly. Her neck was contorted all the way back and she fell onto her back, unable to move.

When i took her into the vet, our regular vet who is very familiar with waterfowl was not there. The vet i did see said that it looks like she is having a seizure and maybe we could give her valium. Honestly, it didn't look like a seizure to me. Perhaps she hit her head one of the times she was falling over. i don't know. But her severe contortion, and that she could only move one leg by the time i took her in did not seem recoverable to me. Made the hard decision to send her over the Rainbow Bridge.

It's so different in our house now without our beloved cat. And it's so quiet outside without Cindy. She was our loudest duck. My husband broke down and sobbed uncontrollably yesterday as he took the peas to the ducks at bedtime.

Here is a picture of Cindy.
