I found Franny, one of our Buff Orpingtons, who was about 1.5 years old, passed away today laying just under the hanging bucket feeder. She was laying down as they do normally when they're resting, with her legs tucked under her, and her neck outstretched. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with her! It was a cool morning, in the 60s.
I thought maybe a heart attack, but Google is mainly saying they are found on their backs or side. She literally looks like she laid/sat down, resting, and passed away. Not like there was a seizure or a struggle of any kind...it looked very..peaceful?
If it means anything, she always struggled more than the others in the heat of the summer, with her comb showing signs of heat exhaustion occasionally. Sometimes her comb would be purplish, or even pale after laying an egg. I never noticed that with the others. Looking back, I wonder if it could have been a weak heart? (But Google saying they are found on their backs or sides after a heart attack throws me for a loop.)
The others are fine; poop is fine, eyes are clear and bright, appetites are good, no parasites I can see, they were wormed in the spring.
I know sending her away for an autopsy is the only sure way to know, but I wondered if anyone could give any insight given the peaceful position I found her in, and seemingly healthy a day or so ago.
I'm sad, shes our first loss. We hand raised her and her sisters from chicks 😞

I wanted to add, I really don't know if it happened last night or this morning. Their coop is inside their run, and they put themselves in at night. I don't know if she didn't go in with them last night, and passed during the night, or if she came out with them this morning and passed. Not sure that it matters, but thought I'd add.

The necropsy would show what happened to her, its impossible to tell otherwise.
