Lost our first rooster :(

This morning our sweet rooster, Fred, valiantly defended his hens after the neighbor’s bird dog got into the run (due to a faulty latch). He was a good pet and a gentle rooster to the hens. It appears he died quickly and painlessly. I am so sad and feel awful for the little guy.
I am working today to assure the fence is secure to prevent this from happening again, but I am worried about the hens. They seem very upset and confused. Will this go away? Do I need to get a new rooster? Will they mourn for a few days? Thank you

Sorry for your loss of Fred. Fix thing's up so that nothing can get in there but you, and then get another rooster if you'd like to. I put a padlock on mine, and keep the key with me. There are people all the time who are trying to rehome either rooster's that they can't have where they live at, or they have too many for the amount of hen's that they have. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. I will be sure to secure everything.
