Lost some chickens today :(

Thank you for the kind words.
The surviving girls are in shock still but are finally eating. They’ve remained locked up in our coop - with food and water. None want to leave, which is fair enough.

I did post about our Cochin in the thread section you mentioned. No visible wounds but limping significantly..
I saw your post on your cochin’s leg. Sorry that she is going through that, leg injuries can be tough to treat. She is beautiful. Glad that the other girls are showing improvement.

The educators gave good advice. Usually they’re very good at self limiting activities. Just be sure she isn’t having to jump up and down to roost or anything. You might try feeling very carefully up and down her leg/foot for any swelling or anything out of place.

Thank you ❤️
She’s a very stunning girl indeed

Today we lost some of our chickens. 3 dogs broke in, damaged some fencing and took the lives of 5 of our girls. Injured a further 2 and the remaining 5 (including the injured ones) are all in shock.

I posted in our local fb group looking for the dogs, with only brief descriptions and their owner messages messaged me. Stating that they’ve done this before (including doing it to her own) And she could “give me some of her chickens”

Unfortunately it’s not that simple and I’m unsure what to do.

We had chickens I cannot replace. (Sentimental reasons but also - they just aren’t available Locally. I had to drive hours for them.)

Besides asking her to replace the fencing her dogs damaged - what do I do about the chickens? I’m grateful she wants to do the right thing. But I don’t think giving me your backyard flock really says you’re understanding and know how serious this is - especially when it’s not her dogs first attack..

I’m absolutely devastated and furious.. our girls who are in shock have been kept In the dark- warm, we have scrambled eggs and electrolytes in water. Any other suggestions for them would be fabulous also.
i would live to know how to replace two chickens for my friends in south denver, who lost two (that were hatched in February ) to dogs/predators. thank you for any local information, i will drive to get a couple. thank you. !

Your heart is in the right place but it's not that simple. Bringing in adult birds from another flock is extremely risky due to biosecurity concerns. Put simply, the new birds could bring diseases, lice or mites in to the existing flock which could have devastating and long-term results. A period of quarantine is required which can be very inconvenient and difficult. Besides that, new birds are not readily accepted by the established flock, requiring a period of integration, which is also inconvenient and takes time and effort.

Sorry, That is just awful. The dog owner should not have let the dogs run wild! Replacing the birds is ok but as you mentioned if you have a bond with your birds then to me those birds are not replaceable. Especially rare breeds on top of being pets.
