I have moved my 5 and 6 week old chickens to their coop/run. This is their second night in the coop. There is a lot of peeping coming from the coop. Last night we did not turn on the heat lamp and they were quiet. Tonight it’s raining and low of 55. So I turned on the heat lamp. The temperature is around 72 and there is a vent open at the top of the coop. I’ve checked on them and they are all on the roost - far end away from the heat lamp. Should I unplug the heat lamp?? They are all fully feathered.

I would go ahead and remove the heat lamp. They are letting you know they don't need it anymore by roosting away from it. And at that age they are able to maintain their own body heat. Congratulations on having a flock of teenagers! Now the fun really begins!

Yes, they will settle down in the dark. I have mine out there and they will be 3 weeks Friday. But they have enough space, and get more exercise. I just love them out there.
