I got Cayugas because I heard they are quiet. One female is and the other is too except for in the morning. Every morning when the sun gets to a certain point she won't shut up. The only thing that helps is letting her out, in which she runs around the yard like a mad duck quacking as loud as she can for about 2 minutes and then she settles down for the day.

We live in an HOA community, which allows the ducks, but I worry someone will complain about the noise.

My question is, is there anyway to break her of this habit? I'm considering sleeping her inside for awhile to see if that will help break the habit.

It does sound like she has you well trained. ;) So she starts quacking you go an let her out? Any way you can make their house darker? They do like to start their day at the quack of dawn( sorry couldn’t resist). You could try covering windows and see if that helps. Then try moving her inside if the first fails. My females have their moments too. But it seems to have settled down now. Maybe has something to do with daylight hours hormones and habits. And maybe appease the neighbors with fresh eggs till you figure out what works?

Lol, she def has us trained. I think she went broody this morning. So maybe we will have peace for a month.

They live in a dog house surrounded by an 8 by dog kennel so they have lots of light in the morning before I let them out to free range.

So I solved the problem. My duck was loud because she had a nest outside of the pen that we lock her up at night. She was wanting to be let out super early to go lay her egg in her special preferred laying site. So I created some very enticing laying sites in the pen and didnt let her out until she gave up and picked a site in the pen. Now we don't get all the noise at dawn.
