We have 10 week old coturnix inside. Some of them will hold their head up high & start really loud peeping (peeeppeeeep peeeppeeep). Will males and females both do this?

Thanks

Yep:) I will have to keep track of how many are doing it. They have been doing it from so early on. DH said he's moving them to brood in the basement b/c they are so loud:)

What is the ideal male:female ratio?

And does anyone know how you find out if you can release them for bug control? We have wild quail in the area.

Ideal is 1:2-1:5 any less and he'll have them bald and any more and you'll lose fertility.

Edited to add- YOu probably see Bob whites in your area not coturnix. I have no idea on how you would go about releasing them. I don't think they will hang around from what i understand.

Which type of coturnix do you have? If they are the Pharaoh Brown, you can also tell by color on their chest. The male has an orange-red color and very few or no specks, the female is tan with brown specks.

I have 2 quails about 4 weeks old that i hatched i am pretty sure that one is a male it does the singing and is way bigger than the other one. Are they like chickens and one male will be dominant and the other not sing or do i more than likely have a male and female. The smaller one has a brown throat and brown specks on the chest. Any opinions on if the smaller is a boy or girl. I know a pic would help a lot but i dont have batteries worth a flip. Thanks for the help

These are the ones I hatched & hear the peeping. Can the button breed with coturnix?

DH bought these, but I don't know how to sex them either. Are pharaoh and coturnix the same type of quail?

Pharoah is just the wild size of coturnix

Jumbo brown is the production size of coturnix (same color as pharoah)...can also be sexed by chest feathers.

A & Ms (which i see you hav e a good bit of those the white ones) you cannot sex by looking.

Goldens i see you do have those you can sex by their chest feathers as well... roos will have a rusty chest at 6 weeks, hens will have a spotted chest at six weeks (you can sex them earlier than that but for a newbie it's easier to sex then).

Tibetans (i see you have those) you cannot visually sex.

Tuxedos (i see you have one of those, dark back, and white chest) you cannot sex by looking..

ALL of these colors (and others) are all the same species of coturnix quail... it's just like the breed of dog the Lab... theres chocolate labs, yellow labs and black labs they are ALL the same, just different colors...same with coturnix.

This post will answer all your color iding needs (atleast for your batch of colors) as well as how to sex colors you cannot visually sex:::

Thank you:) That is very helpful. We didn't think the feed store knew what type of quail the white ones were. They were originally selling them for over $6 a piece!! DH bought them for less than $3. I paid $4 for all the hatching eggs of the ones I hatched. They are sure fun to watch!
