We started with 3 Rhode Island red 3 years ago. Added 6 babies the following year (2 Orpington, 2 Australorp, 2 RIR). This year we ordered 12 more babies (mixed breeds) as we lost our first 3 girls. Of course one turned out to be a Rooster and we lost 4 to a Cooper Hawk as well as 2 of our grown hens.
So we had to replace them and got 8 more babies :-) (Some plymouth rock, leghorn, welsummer and wyandotte)
Once you start you get hooked. We love our girls. After lots of reading and visit to vet we made sure that this year's addition were vaccinated against Marek and bought them from hatcheries and not Tractor Supply.
Didn't expect to have some much fun taking care of chickens.
