Hi! I'm new to this thread and have found it really useful. I bought two silkie chicks from a breeder when they were a few days old. They are now four months old and such sweeties! This morning when I went to check on them (we have thirteen chickens of various breeds), the one at the top crowed at me! We've been wondering what gender this chick was and now we know. The photograph isn't very clear (he kept moving around), but I thought I'd post a photo so that others might know what a silkie rooster looks like.
Tonight I let all the chicks and chickens out of the enclosed coop/run for the first time. They were all so happy to be out (we've had bad luck with stray dogs and other predators, so keep them secured). I watched them for half an hour and then needed to run back up to the house. When I came back down, I couldn't find the black silkie pullet (the one on the bottom). Our yard is enclosed and she couldn't fly very well. I'm so heartbroken... I was gone for two minutes and can't find her anywhere. They are all back in the coop, but she is nowhere to be found. I spent an hour outside with a flashlight looking for her. I hope she turns up tomorrow, but this breed doesn't have a very strong self-protective instinct
