loveable chicken

tell me about your chickens!!!!!!

We just moved them to a new spot for the summer, so they are in a new house and are confined to quarters (8' x 10', plenty big) for a week so that they will know where their new home is for night roosting once we let them free range. So the past 3 days when I've gone out to collect eggs I've got hens that actually are pecking at my toes (in sandals). The first day it was one hen with tentative pecks and now it's insistent pecks and two hens. It's a little unnerving since I've never had this happen before. Not ever, but these are first year hens. So I will be glad when we let them out to free range come this weekend and I can collect eggs in peace. And of course, I still love 'em. How can I not? But I think they want to eat me for an afternoon snack. I'll be wearing closed toe shoes tomorrow! (If I can remember before I get into the coop.)

I have two Easter Eggers (Hanna and Clementine) that jump on my back when they can, jump on my lap if I sit and pick at my clothes. One wants to try and snap my bra if she can reach it! I have a Buff Orpington (Cutie) chick that is the sweetest little thing. She comes over to me and wants to sit on my lap or on my feet. If I pick her up and hold her she burries her head in my armpit and closes her eyes! My Silver Laced Wyandotte (Zee) jumps on my lap, then to my shoulder so she can crouch under my hair and peck at my glasses. Makes it hard to get any work done around here.
