Hi Everybody,
I noticed a decrease in eggs as the weather turned hotter and I figured it was the heat, but then I started seeing soft eggs and eggs laid while roosting. These are not new layers, so I was wondering if something might be wrong. I don't really need more eggs, but I'm worried the girls might be sick or something.

I feed layena food, I feed the egg shells back to the girls, My yard is mostly sand and their run is 30x50. I use the dry litter method. The chicken coop is a little dusty, but that's mostly from the food......

any thoughts......

Make sure they have lots of protein...I feed mine cheese, cooked dried beans, cooked meat scraps (not heavily salted or spiced) and yogurt. They need lots of protein for both egg and feather production. The nice thing with the cheese and yogurt items is that it also provides calcium. Broccoli is also an excellent source of calcium

For the ground eggshells, do you make it free for them or mix it in with their food? We use both eggshell and oyster shell and make it available for them...they usually know what they need and will go for it.
