Hi! I'm just sitting around genuinely stumped on supplements! I know chickens need lutein to produce the dark orange eggs, and mine do mostly, but I was wondering if it's safe to crush up some lutein pills and mix it in there breakfast? I won't do it until I'm sure it's totally safe!

any carotenoid will improve yolk color
that could be from squash, alfalfa or any other source

it doesn't improve nutrition, just yolk color

I wouldn't give them something meant for human consumption... They should get most of their needs from their food without needing to supplement... You would do better to source a natural substance for lutein, like dark leafy greens...

Are you concerned about them missing lutein in their diet? Fyi,...Corn has one of the highest concentrations of lutein there is in feed ;)

And what is chicken breakfast? No offense but chickens are voracious eaters and need chicken feed intended for their stage of growth available all the time. If there is no feed available, they'll fill their crop with what is at hand. That may be feces, bedding or whatever. Many of those things may not be optimal nutrition like a balanced feed is.

I only call it breakfast because they get only get it in the morning. They are pastured and they have a large box of feed in the run they have 24/7 access to. I give them the breakfast more so as a treat. It contains meal worms, omega 3 crumbles, a dried herb mix, and some scratch or oats
