Approx 5-6 weeks old. Recently purchased, in quarantine. Noticed a lump on left side of abdomen under vent. About the size of a quarter. Chick is lethargic and puffed but still eats and drinks. Poop is runny. Skin is slightly flaky?
Have had these birds 5 days. The three others appear to be healthy with no symptoms of any kind. Eyes and nostrils are clear, no sneezing, wheezing, or shaking of the head. A few times in the first day or so of having this chick I noticed her stretch her neck out like chicken w gape worm might, but she has since stopped and has no accompanying symptoms of that. No presence of mites or lice that I can see.

Have you tried feeling the mass? It may be a cyst possibly. If I had a heavy ball hanging under my but that didn't belong there I wouldn't be the happiest chick. Cyst are a form of infection. Seems uncomfortable though poor thing. It may need drained possibly if it's a cyst. Runny poop is it just her and the others are normal poop and running around her? Maybe try an epsom salt soak for her. Wouldn't hurt just don't let her drink the bath.

It is hard and definitely cyst-like. Would I just take scalpel and cut it open? Is there any kind of topical anesthetic I could use at least? I'm assuming injectable I'd have to get from a vet. Is there a way to 100% know it is a cyst before I cut into it? I feel fairly certain if I do not do anything the poor thing will decline until death.

You could just have a vet do the draining and do after care soaks. I mean you could (this is only if you are 100% sure of your ability to keep it clean) take a needle light it and prick then squeeze it. If you have a scalpel handy that works just keep it clean wear gloves and use caution with it. Do like this guy:

gloves and cloths/wipes at the ready.

Antiseptic spray is a must and checking it often for changes. If you have want you can post the pics of the test or the after results. You could also do epsom salt soaks first and see if it will rupture naturally and drain that way first. Epsom salts could be a first option and never hurts to have on hand should you ever want a soak for yourself or to treat bumblefoot or make bath bombs with the remains.. lol.
