This mysterious lump showed up on one of our Bantam White Wyandottes last week. We immediately isolated her.

She does not appear to be in any pain, although she closes her eyes frequently, as you can see in the photos. She acts more listless than usual, but is eating and drinking fine. And she usually doesn't always have her eyes closed, except when she is resting or when we pick her up.

We suspected an ear infection, so we put her on a course of injectable Penicillin G for the last 3 days (0.2ml/day--we plan to go for 5-7 days). We have also been giving her electrolytes and putting drops of VetRx on her nostrils.

So far, there has not been any change, either for the better or the worse. The lump is not bleeding or oozing, and is hard, but does not feel unusually warm.

Any ideas as to what could cause this and an effective treatment?

A 5-day course of Penicillin did not change her symptoms. Some minor things we started to notice (slight gurgling, swelling around the eyes) caused us to suspect that maybe it was a sinus infection. So, we started her on Oxytetracycline, which has caused a slight improvement after 1 day.

Her energy certainly has improved, so we'll see.

Is it possible she got bit by a spider or a wasp in that area? If you don't get successful results with the oxy you can try LA200. Its an injection and geared for swelling and infection. You would dose with 1/4 cc given in breast muscle once daily for 5 days.perhaps that would help if you don't get successful results with oxy. I hope she gets better soon best wishes
