DH tried to log into his lycos e-mail & got a prompt to register for an advanced $19.95 service. He swears he has had no notification that this would happen. The prompt page looked odd, especially a link "about daum" (????) that had odd symbols & little text. He tried to contact customer service, which prompted him to enter his username + PASSWORD. Why would they need that? He already entered it.
Anyway, I was wondering if the many thousands of tech-savvy BYCers could shed some light on this????

Has lycos been hacked or are they just pulling a fast one on long-term customers?

I have no idea what Lycos is, but that sounds like a classic hack attempt. Someone was trying to get his password. Just ignore those message and don't fill any of it out.

You could have an entry in your hosts file sending you to a fake page that is not lycos. To check, go to the following folder and open the file 'hosts' in notepad:

C:\\\\WINDOWS\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts

If there is an entry in the file that says something like (I'm making up the numbers part):

www.lycos.com 111.11.111.111

Delete the entire line and save the file.

To see the file, you may have to set up your system to show hidden files:
My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab->Select the 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button->OK

Then, once you've made the hosts file change, go back and hide your folders again (this keeps people from inadvertently screwing up system files.)

This will only work if you have inadvertently picked something up that has added a fake redirect to your hosts file. It's worth a look, I've had this happen to a number of people.
