This past weekend I went to the Apache County Poultry Show and saw an unusual duck. It has two tufts, one on each side of its head, that reminded me so much of someone wearing a mouseketeers hat that now that song is going around in my head. Anyway, I have never seen a duck like this before and sent a picture of it to a friend who is also a chicken addict and member here, and it was new to her, too. Can you identify the breed of this duck? Is this something new? Very curious.

Rather a Crested Blue Swedish due to the grey body.

The tuft, or “crest” on the head is a genetic deformity, usually inherited from a parent duck, but they can very rarely appear spontaneously, too. Typically, there’s only 1 crest, so I’d say him having 2 is extra rare.

A rare one? Should she have gotten it?

What made this one so unusual was the two tufts with a little valley of smooth feathers in between. It was entered in the show but not for sale. I have seen crested birds before, but never one like that. Maybe that was why they chose to show it and let everybody see it?
