Can I give my chickens some cooked mackerel fish heads? I'm pretty sure they'll like them, but am not sure if it's okay to give chickens fish with bones. I wouldn't give fish heads to my dog for that reason, but am not sure if bones are okay for chickens.

My husband grew up on an orchard and has told me "whatever you do, don't feed the chickens fish, or I won't eat the eggs!" The farmer his mom used to buy eggs from would occasionally feed the the hens fish. He says the eggs smelled and tasted sort of like it, not always, but enough for him to remember 30 years later, no fish for the hens. Just FYI if they are layers.

I've fed mine a lot of fish for the calcium and their eggs have never tasted like fish. I use a 32 quart Presto pressure cooker, once the canner is exhausted, I cook at 10-15 pounds of pressure for 1-1 1/2 hours depending on the size of the fish and the size of the bones. If its a large size boned fish, like cod, I'll cook at 15 pounds pressure for 2 hours. Cod is a bit sweet compared to salmon. Those are the only species other than a few trout mine have had. Other fish and other methods of feeding/cooking might affect the taste but not as I've done...
