They were absolutely going NUTS - flying everywhere trying to get away! I waited for a little while, hoping they would calm down. Even gave them some scratch to try to distract them but NOPE. As soon as I took it off, they were totally back to normal. Maybe if I made it buff orp color instead of blue?
I had 7 girls that all had to wear saddles. There were different reactions from all of them when "installed". Most settled down after a few minutes. But a couple took an hour or so before they "accepted" their new attire. Now they aren't even aware of the existance of the saddles on themselves.
Saddles for me were an absolute lifesaver. We only had 1 Roo, appropriately named Randy, and he was ripping up all of them. Their feathers grow back underneath the saddles really fast too. Mine were Buff Orpingtons and SL Wyandottes. The SLW were the ones that fussed the most at first.
Good luck. Give them a little time. They'll get used to it.
They have elastic and fit under the wings and around the neck. It helps to save their back feathers from...um...overly zealous roosters who tend to wear their feathers away.
Sometimes, most times, the feathers aren't just worn away. They are ripped away by the claws of the rooster. This leaves bald and often times bloody raw skin on the back and shoulders of the hens. Not only unsightly, but very suseptible to further damage by infection, picking, etc.
