I have a RIR 7 year old chicken who always seemed to have a problem with droppings clinging to her backside. Occasionally I would take her in my lap and squirt warm soap water and clean her up...something we both really didn't care for.
She was getting real dirty again and I noticed she was lethargic that morning and separated herself from the other 2 girls and then I noticed she was dripping blood from her rear. I started cleaning her and then realized flies must have laid eggs in the mess and the maggots had bored into her skin in several areas and had actually ate away a large patch of skin and her intestine was exposed.
It took me over 1/2 hour to clean the wounds with alcohol and a toothbrush, there was just so many maggots and they kept popping out from the edge of the wound like they would never stop. Surprisingly she held still while I was cleaning her and it must have been so painful. There was some arreas on her back where I could see maggots crawling under her skin so had to make a slit in her skin and squeeze them out.
I kept her in a box by my bed last night thinking she would die but she is up and walking around in the garage, but has bad diarrhea and not eating robustly like she was just a few days ago. I can't let her outside where flies will attack the wound and dirt will get in. Any suggestion of some sort of diaper I can put on her to cover the wound? Any type of medicine to kill maggots that might still be inside her? I know the odds are against such an old chicken but we know how attached we get to our girls and I want to give her a fighting chance. Thanks
