maggots? worms just found in hen's vent

sbicheidi - Internal layer was the first thing I thought when I read that she hasn't layed since her egg-binding incident. However, I see dlhunicorn is helping you - her advice is better than any I could give.
Good luck - I have my fingers crossed for your little girl.
Oh - there are fly-repellent ointments that can be used on open wounds. There is a kind called SWAT that is for horses and works very well. I don't know if it is approved for chickens but you could check with your vet or the manufacturer.

My Shiner laid a normal egg today, and seems to be eating and acting normally. Is this just a pullet getting used to her laying cycle? Could the fireworks have upset her system? Thanks for any help

thanks chickbea - cleaning the wound and dressing w/triple antibiotic seems to have done the trick. there must have been a window there in between me checking her wound that the maggots had time to find her. that must happen pretty fast. at least they keep the wound clean, as nasty looking as they are. i can only guess that the wound might have developed as she was walking around so awkardly, perhaps from dragging her bum on the ground. it looks a lot better now.

i have a spray that i use on the goats called "furol" and i thought of using that, but like the one you mention, it's for horses and cattle and i decided against it. i'd imagine it would be ok, but opted to play it safe.

we're off to the vet in an hour.

hi everyone, to follow up, i took lucy to the vet today.

lucy was filled w/eggs inside her abdominal cavity. the vet couldn't even palpate an organ. her condition was not operable and the dr. felt she was suffering so we helped her along. she was so full of cooked egg that the dr. had to inject her twice because she injected into egg the first time.

appearently the eggs, being protein, sort of bond to the organs. she said it's virtually impossible to remove them. if the eggs had been confined, say to the ovaduct, she could have had a hysterectomy, like in penny's case.

anyway, than you all for your help. i miss lucy, she was my very favorite hen. my neighbor has offered us a few of his hens to add to our flock, so hopefully they'll help fill the void.

I'm sorry for your loss.
but it was the best thing to do for her.

Poor baby, you did the best you could. Good luck with all your others. After reading all the posts I felt like I had to say something.
