Hi Everyone!!
I have six pretty little Hens.
2 ee, 1 wyandot, and 3 Dominques. Hope I spelled those all right. lol..
Anyway, I have been reading on this site for about a week now and thought I would finally jump in.
Even with all this information I just cant seem to find the right answer to the Rooster question I have.
I know that in the future I want to have some chicks. I have read that the Roo's can be mean, and I definately dont want that. I also have read where they can hurt the hens. I dont want that either. So what would you suggest? Should I get a Rooster? Do I have enough hens for a Roo? Would he be mean to goats? And what kind of Roo should I get if I got one?
Ok, so that was more than one question but I figured if anyone would have the answers you all would.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

nice work for being new to chickens! here is a chart that can be very helpful to you...
Henderson's Chicken Chart

roosters....roosters are generally not mean at all. you don't NEED one, but they will run with your ladies and watch over them normally. and you can get free chicks! if you want to have male birds, start with breeds that are known to be more docile. maybe Orpingtons, Sussex or Australorps. (i have all and the males are easy going and generally not aggressive. the Sussex are kind of big babies actually!)

as for the goat thingy, they will have to work it out. there is no one answer. the goats will probably put him in his place, and he will probably let them know when they are too close to his. and then again, they may all run as a group.

welcome and sure glad you're here!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome..

Lora, I am in the Bangor Area. It's pretty quiet here. Nice area but close enough to town for those here that like that. lol I personally would love to be nestled much deeper in the woods of Maine. But its nice.

And such a huge help. So, I went on the link you put in your post. That too was just awesome!!! Now Im in search of a Sussex I think. They look nice but I love how gentle they sound. We have a new grandchild coming this month. Tho, I know it will be quite some time before she can visit the chicks I want to be sure its a safe area for her and for any child that comes to visit. So, once again, Thank you sooo very much for taking the time and giving me so much information. I truly appreciate it!

from Vermont!

I had chickens for nearly a year before I got a roo. I thought they were all mean too! But I have a big buff orp boy now and he's been a wonderful addition to the flock. He finds food for the girls and calls them over, he's always on the watch while they range around and he almost never eats the treats I put out for them, he's such a gentleman and makes sure they all get some! I will never be roo-less again!

There are some mean roos out there, and if you happen upon one of these rehome him (craigslist works great) as there are so many nice roos one shouldn't have to keep a mean one!

Good luck, nice to have you here!

Thank you all soooooooooo much for your replies. I truly appreciate your help. I have decided to get an Australorp. He comes home tomorrow.. Keeping my fingers crossed that he remains a good boy. I think we will name him Russel "Crow" lol... since I cant wait to hear him crow for the first time. He was born Easter weekend..

we have a Bantie rooster who is so nice, there's not a mean feather in him, i guess it's because he's a little hen pecked....
