We really wanted to use the deep litter method, but with our raised coop, it wasn't possible, at least by our attempts. We had a terrible stinky fly filled box of 3" litter fast.

We now have a tray full of PDZ and DE that is super easy to maintain, so it remains odor and fly free, it's much much better.
