Hi! I'm new here! Since I'm supposed to be working right now, I'm just going to follow the handy-dandy writing prompts from the Admins.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My mom is a chicken nut, so I've been around them my whole life. I'm in the over 40 bucket now, and did buy my very first chicks a year ago, from a lady selling them in the Walmart parking lot. BIG mistake. They had some kind of illness that showed up about a week after we got the chicks home. Lost 2 of the 6, the vet said they should all be fine in a couple of months. We kept them quarantined for 4 months total to be safe, but when we did move them to the coop, with my mom's chickens (we live on the same ranch), they got her chickens sick, and we lost a bunch. We still don't know what they contracted.
Lesson learned, very hard.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Well, I just bought 17 chicks over the weekend...
So those will be added to the 13 we have in the chicken coop outside.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I like all the fun and weird stuff! We have Frizzles, a Silkie, Polish Crested, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, one Lavender Orpington chick (my dream chicken!!), Self Blue Old English Game Bantam, Cinnamon Queens, Black Marans, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, Americanas, ISA Browns, an Olive Egger, a Cream Legbar... and the hatchery threw in a free Barred Rock pullet. We could have a seriously odd backyard breeding program lol!!!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They're therapeutic. I love having so many different kinds of chickens, all the colors and personalities are fun!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Riding my horses, gardening, helping out at church (I run our Facebook page, website, and coffee bar!), sewing cosplay costumes (anime and Renaissance), and I used to like to read, I just never have time now.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a single mom of 3 kids, a teenager, a tween, and an elementary school aged kiddo. I moved from Idaho to Missouri in 2005, and am praying to move back to Idaho someday! I am a Senior Analyst for Fujifilm 3 national accounts for in-store and online photo processing (basically, I live in excel). I have a couple of side gigs, I have run a little etsy shop for several years where I sell hand dyed silk scarves (my minor is in fine art, textiles). I also do face painting! That is my favorite side gig - I do birthday parties, festivals, business events, etc. Well, I did before COVID... not sure how things are going to pan out for all of the fall craft and art fairs.
Since I live on a ranch, I have a whole host of other critters. We have beef cattle, horses, Nigerian Pygmy goats, half a dozen cats, and a redbone coonhound. We keep busy!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I did a google search for something chicken related and stumbled upon the group here.
